Resistivity is a concrete testing method used to measure bulk resistance.
A current is applied across two probes, and two other probes record Voltage change, from which the Resistivity is calculated.
The principle is known as the Wenner Probe method.
A current is applied to the two outer probes, and the potential difference is measured between the two inner probes. The current is carried by ions in the pore liquid. The calculated resistivity depends on the spacing of the probes.
Resistivity ρ= 2πaV/l [kΩcm]
Using the Resipod Wenner Probe Method
Used to perform resistivity measurements on concrete as a non-destructive test.
How the ResiPod Wenner Probe Works
The ResiPod Wenner Probe method is based on the 4-point Wenner technique, where four electrodes are placed on the concrete surface in a line. A current is passed through the outer two electrodes, while the voltage drop between the inner two electrodes is measured to calculate the electrical resistivity. This resistivity measurement provides valuable information about the moisture content and corrosion potential of the concrete, which is essential for ensuring structural durability.
Wider probe spacings give more consistent readings when measuring inhomogeneous materials like concrete, but care must be taken to avoid interference from reinforcement steel. The industry standard 50mm spacing provides an excellent balance.
The 38mm model is tailored to meet the AASHTO standard for assessing chloride ion penetration resistance in concrete.
The optional contact extension cable kit allows for variable probe spacings (20-85mm), offering greater flexibility.
Why Concrete Resistivity Testing is Important
Predicts Corrosion Risk – Identifies areas prone to reinforcement corrosion due to high moisture content or chloride ion penetration.
Assesses Concrete Durability – Helps evaluate permeability and the concrete’s ability to withstand environmental conditions.
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) – Provides a quick and reliable in-situ measurement without damaging the structure.
Early Detection of Issues – Allows for preventative maintenance by identifying vulnerable areas before major damage occurs.
Compliance with Standards – Ensures structures meet relevant industry standards for durability and safety.
By using the ResiPod Wenner Probe method, you gain valuable insight into concrete's long-term performance, enabling better structural maintenance, corrosion management, and construction quality control.
